Jack up the back of the van so the top of the coolant tank is at the same level as the top of the radiator.Open the bleeder on the radiator and the thermostat housing, then remove the cap from the coolant tank.
Syphon about a gallon of coolant out of the coolant tank into a clean container. Once this is done, you should be able to remove the top of the thermostat housing without losing too much coolant.
Make sure you spray down the hardware with some penetrating oil before you try and loosen it. Replace the thermostat and o-ring, then replace the upper housing. Pour the coolant back into the coolant tank, squeezing the hose from the right head to the coolant distributor to force out any bubbles. You should be able to get most
of the coolant back in the system, put what's left in the overflow tank. Close the coolant tank, radiator and thermostat housing bleeders. Lower the van and drive it, checking the coolant level in the overflow tank after it warms up.
You shouldn't have to bleed it, but if you are skeptical, go ahead and try to. The first two times I filled the system this way, I bled
it afterward but never got any air out of the system.
Now I don't bother with bleeding the system.
